The STEM Gift Drive was grateful to be invited to participate in the Orange County Office on Aging’s first annual Volunteer Fair, connecting adults 55 and older with volunteer opportunities across Central Florida.
It was an opportunity to share our mission, meet people interested in making a difference, and introduce ways to help young people explore science, technology, engineering, and math.
Thank you to the Office on Aging for creating a space where people could discover opportunities that fit their interests, experience, and availability.
Making a difference can make a difference in your life, too
During the fair, Sharon Smith of Volunteers for Community Impact gave an inspiring presentation about why we volunteer and how to find the right fit.
People volunteer for all kinds of reasons. Some want to meet others or feel more connected to their community. Some want to share skills developed over a lifetime. Others want to learn something new, support a cause they care about, or contribute to the next generation.
Volunteering can bring new relationships, meaningful experiences, and the satisfaction of seeing your efforts help someone else. It can also give us a front-row seat to the generosity, creativity, and kindness happening around us.
At the STEM Gift Drive, we get to see that kindness take shape in the gifts people collect and the connections they build. Every person who shares the drive, invites someone to participate, or helps organize a collection becomes part of that effort.
Find something that fits you
A worthwhile volunteer experience starts with a few questions:
- What do you enjoy, care about, or want to learn?
- How much time would you like to give?
- Would you prefer working with people, helping behind the scenes, or contributing from home?
- What practical considerations matter, such as transportation, accessibility, or expenses?
- What would help you feel welcomed, supported, and confident in your role?
Your answers matter. A project can have a wonderful mission and still be the wrong fit for your schedule, interests, or circumstances. Starting with a manageable commitment gives you a chance to learn what you enjoy and where you want to invest more time.
Your time deserves thoughtful stewardship
Before committing to a volunteer opportunity, learn about the organization and the work it is asking you to do.
Who benefits? What will your responsibilities be? Will you receive orientation, clear instructions, and a person to contact with questions? Are there costs or requirements you should know about? How will you learn what your contribution helped accomplish?
Taking time to check protects against scams, but it also helps prevent disappointing experiences. Even a legitimate project can leave volunteers frustrated if expectations are unclear, support is missing, or the work differs from what they anticipated.
Ask questions, verify the organization’s identity and any claimed nonprofit status, and find out where donations go. If something is unclear, you deserve an explanation before deciding to participate.
Could the STEM Gift Drive be your fit?
You don’t need a background in science or technology to help future innovators.
You might bring the drive to your workplace, neighborhood, club, or community. You could invite friends to collect gifts together, introduce us to a potential collection partner, or help others learn about the drive.
Your experience and relationships can open doors. A conversation with someone you know might introduce the mission to an entirely new group of supporters.
If you are interested in volunteering or collecting gifts, contact us directly. We can talk about your interests, availability, and the ways you would like to participate.
We provide ongoing support for volunteers and people organizing collections. You can ask questions, get guidance, and stay connected as your effort takes shape.
We also take care with what happens after the gifts are collected. Our donations go to a carefully vetted nonprofit partner with the infrastructure and programming to support appropriate distribution. That partnership helps connect our supporters’ generosity with the young people the drive is intended to serve.
Our commitment to inclusion extends to the people who serve alongside us and the young people our work benefits: We need everyone’s help. We help everyone.
We are grateful to the Office on Aging for bringing people and possibilities together—and to everyone who stopped to learn about the STEM Gift Drive.
