Imagine a young person connecting a circuit and watching a light come on for the first time. Or building a model bridge, testing its strength, and immediately thinking of a way to make it stronger. Or opening a book about space and discovering a question they can’t stop thinking about.
There is something wonderful about that moment when curiosity becomes personal: I want to understand this. I want to try that. I wonder what else I could do.
That is the heart of the STEM Gift Drive.
As our 2026 campaign begins, we’re inviting our communities to help inspire future innovators through high-quality science, technology, engineering, and mathematics toys, games, books, and kits. Together, we can put opportunities for discovery into the hands of young people whose interests deserve encouragement.
The future needs curious minds
Scientists, engineers, mathematicians, technicians, and other STEM professionals help solve problems that affect all of us. Their work contributes to cleaner water, safer buildings, medical discoveries, accessible technology, and countless improvements in everyday life.
The need for these skills continues to grow. In its 2024–2034 projections, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that STEM employment would grow by 8.1%, compared with 2.7% for non-STEM occupations—three times the rate.
Some industries also anticipate significant workforce shortfalls. A 2023 study by the Semiconductor Industry Association and Oxford Economics projected that approximately 67,000 U.S. semiconductor jobs for technicians, engineers, and computer scientists could remain unfilled by 2030 without action to address the talent gap.
Needs & projected shortages vary across fields; such projections do, however, underscore the importance of helping more young people discover STEM possibilities and access the learning opportunities that can prepare them to participate.
That journey can begin long before someone chooses a college, apprenticeship, technical program, or career. It can begin with an opportunity to explore.
An interest needs somewhere to grow
A young person may already love numbers, wonder how machines work, or want to understand the animals in their neighborhood. Having something they can investigate, build, read, or experiment with gives that curiosity somewhere to go.
Research reviewed by the National Research Council describes how repeated, meaningful experiences can help an initial spark of interest develop into a more sustained desire to learn. Opportunities outside the classroom contribute to that process, especially when young people can follow interests that matter to them.
A thoughtfully chosen gift can become one of those opportunities.
- A construction kit offers a chance to test an idea and revise it.
- A strategy game invites a player to recognize patterns and think ahead.
- A science book can introduce an unfamiliar subject—or deepen an existing fascination.
- An experiment kit can make the question “What happens if…?” something a young person can investigate for themselves.
We often think of younger children when we contribute to gift drives, but these opportunities matter for middle and high school students, too. Older youth deserve engaging materials that respect their abilities, challenge their thinking, and support their developing interests.
Quality matters because the experience matters
When we ask for high-quality STEM gifts, we mean materials that offer meaningful opportunities to learn: accurate books, well-designed games, durable building materials, and kits with clear instructions and satisfying possibilities for exploration.
A high-quality gift does not have to be expensive – although, we’d rather have one $300 telescope than 300 dollar store trinkets. Our focus is quality over than quantity. Thoughtful selection matters: Is it appropriate for the recipient’s age? Does it invite active participation? Can they return to it, try something different, or explore further?
We want young people to experience the satisfaction of figuring something out—and to have the tools to keep going when their next question arrives.
For a family balancing essential expenses, these materials may be difficult to fit into the budget. Community support can help make them available. Through the STEM Gift Drive, donors, volunteers, and collection partners share in creating those opportunities.
Careers, hobbies, and the joy of discovery
Some recipients may eventually pursue STEM careers. Others may discover a lifelong love of astronomy, gardening, coding, electronics, puzzles, or building things.
All of those outcomes are worth encouraging.
Young people deserve opportunities to enjoy learning, explore their abilities, and decide for themselves what captures their imagination. They do not need to have a career plan—or already consider themselves “good at science”—to benefit from a chance to experiment.
A gift can also carry a simple, powerful message: Your questions matter. Your interests are worth supporting. There is room for you to explore.
Help inspire a future innovator
As we launch this year’s STEM Gift Drive, we invite you to choose a gift with possibility in mind.
Think of the subject you loved when you were young, the project you wished you could try, or the person who encouraged you to keep asking questions. Then consider how you might offer that encouragement to someone else.
Donate a high-quality STEM toy, game, book, or kit. Invite your workplace or community group to participate. Share the campaign with someone who would love to help.

We may never know every discovery that begins with a gift we give. But we can help make that first discovery possible.
